WAYS WIKIS COULD IMPROVE CLASSROOM INSTRUCTIONS

A lot of students have access to computers/ internet this enables the teacher to post useful information and links for researcher.  By utilizing the wiki, the teacher would be able to guide the students to the pertinent information about the topic without them being side tracked by other sites.

REFLECTION

A wiki page was created for portfolio piece #7 this was accomplished by creating a webpage in google.  The wiki will be used to display information related to building technology, this would enable the students to visit the site and get added information about a topic by either clicking links or viewing other information posted by teacher.
It was my first time creating a web page so it was basically like a trial and error phase, but once I gained an understanding( thanks to my colleagues) on how to accomplish the tasks it was smooth sailing from there.  To improve the site I would add links to puzzles and fun facts to keep the students interested in visiting the site again.

Check out the link bellow for my wiki page on Work Shop Health and Safety Tips

HOW VIDEOS CAN IMPROVE CLASSROOM INSTRUCTIONS
Videos are an additional plus to any classroom setting, especially to students who are visual learners.  Students also get an added opportunity to view the information that is being taught and this helps to reinforce the ideas in their minds.  Making a movie/video gives the teacher a chance to be creative in his or her lesson and it also be used as a tool to help the students learn by allowing them to make their own videos.

REFLECTION
For portfolio piece number 6 a video was created using still pictures and music in movie maker.  This piece will be used to teach first form students about Health and Safety: First Aid Kit.  By watching the video they will be able to observe things found in a first aid kit, recognise persons who can administer first aid, places accidents can happen in relation to school related activities, and what are the step they should follow if they or someone is injured.
While creating the piece I had problems with the program because it kept freezing so I had to keep restarting the computer but luckily I kept on saving. I think the piece could be improved if there were better transitions, animations and if the program was more users friendly and not restricted me from importing certain pictures.

A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.
Ayn Rand

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Let me know what are your thoughts on the quotes.

I especially like the 2nd one, it dears you to be creative and to be a leader.

igenceScore (5.0 is highest)Description

Social
3.57
Social: You like to develop ideas and learn from other people. You like to talk. You have good social skills. Effective techniques of enhancing your learning using your social intelligence include taking part in group discussions or discussing a topic one-to-one with another person. Find ways to build reading and writing exercises into your group activities, such as:
  • Reading a dialogue or a play with other people
  • Doing team learning/investigating projects
  • Setting up interview questions and interviewing your family, and writing down the interview
  • Writing notes to another instead of talking.

Self
3.29
Self: You have a very good sense of self. You like to spend time by yourself and think things over. You will often take in information from another person, mull it over by yourself, and come back to that person later to discuss it. You like working on projects on your own. You often prefer to learn by trial and error. Effective techniques to enhance your learning include keeping a journal and giving yourself time to reflect on new ideas and information. More ideas:
  • Go on "guided imagery" tours.
  • Set aside time to reflect on new ideas and information.
  • Encourage journal writing.
  • Work on the computer.
  • Practice breathing for relaxation.
  • Use brainstorming methods before reading.
  • Listen to and read "how to" tapes and books.
  • Read cookbooks.

Musical
2.86
Musical: You like the rhythm and sound of language. You like poems, songs, and jingles. You enjoy humming or singing along with music. You probably remember things well when they are associated with music or rhythm. Try to incorporate sounds into your lessons, such as using a familiar tune, song, or rap beat to teach spelling rules, or to remember words in a series for a test. Here are some other ways to use your musical intelligence:
  • Create a poem with an emphasis on certain sounds for pronunciation.
  • Clap out or walk out the sounds of syllables.
  • Read together (choral reading) to work on fluency and intonation.
  • Read a story with great emotion — sad, then happy, then angry. Talk about what changes — is it only tone?
  • Work with words that sound like what they mean (onomatopoeia). For example: sizzle, cuckoo, smash.
  • Read lyrics to music.
  • Use music as background while reviewing and for helping to remember new material.
  • Use rhymes to remember spelling rules, i.e., "I before E except after C."

The scores for your other five intelligences:
LanguageNatureBodySpatialMath
2.572.572.432.142
Just because these five are not in your top three doesn’t mean you’re not strong in them. If your average score for any intelligence is above three, you’re probably using that intelligence quite often to help you learn. Take a look at the Practice section to see how to engage all your intelligences.

My blog will be used to communicate with my T- Vet students on line.  They will be able to air their views on topics in class or on issues happening at school.  It will also give them a chance to do assignments on line and  step away from the pen and paper.
